Day 40, November 6, Amsterdam

We got a late start but knew we wanted to hit the Van Gogh museum and maybe do a canal cruise. We found a restaurant in the restaurant district of town that had awesome food. There’s no real staple dish or type of cuisine that comes from Holland other than Heineken so they have tons of different types of restaurants. It’s pretty cool all the restaurants they had, reminded me of home.

We ate, chilled, and befriended our waiter and he brought us a round of complimentary shots after our meal. Then Nate’s parents wanted to do a canal cruise so we let them do that on their own so they could have some alone time and then we went to go check in to our hostel. We met back up with them at the Van Gogh museum a couple hours before it closed and it was the best art museum we’d been to so far. At least for me, I really enjoyed it. Not only was the art and historical value of the art incredible, but the layout of the museum worked incredibly well, unlike the louvre. And Van Gogh’s use of color and his ability to creat texture with the paint was impressive to look at up close and in person. A lot different than looking at pics in art class.

We knew American football was playing that night and Nate’s family are big Steelers fans so they had a divisional matchup against Baltimore who they hate so we tried to find a bar. We watched the first half at this random bar called satellite sports cafe that had all different types of foods from pancakes to ribs served at all hours. We planned on just drinking but you had to eat and drink so we got a couple appetizers. At the end of the first half we decided to hit the red light district again because Nate’s parents wanted to experience it. It was far less crowded on a Sunday night vs a Monday night but you still get the same affect. There’s really nothing to feel about being there, it’s just what it is and so normal to everyone. We went back to our hostel bar to eat a little more and catch the end of the games and then got Nate’s parents a cab and went to bed.
