We woke up and had breakfast at our Air bnb. There was an older gay couple that we were talking to about our trip. When we mentioned we were at Oktoberfest they asked if we had attended gay weekend, we said no and kinda laughed it off. But I think they think we’re gay, but it’s cool, we thought it was funny.
We looked at the weather report after breakfast and it said rain till about 14:00. So we patiently waited, then we hit the town. It was beautiful. Unlike Florence this city is far less touristy so a lot less shop owners speak English. We made our way down an alley that had 1,000 shops minimum; you could find anything from live octopus, to new Nike Air Forces. It reminded me a lot of Pike Place Market in Seattle. So much to see, coffee shops, knick knacks, clothes, people. It took us a while to make it all the way to the end of the alley. But anywhere you turned there were hundreds of more shops so it was like it never ended.
On our walk back we stumbled upon a church in the middle of the alley we hadn’t noticed on our walk through. Oh my gosh was it beautiful, the ceilings were as tall as the Game of Thrones Giants, the floor and structure beams were all beautifully chiseled marble, the ceiling was painted with religious designs from big to small, each section had a different mural or sculpture of a religious figure. And the grand stand where the priest led mass was beyond grand. If you’re Catholic and never make it to Italy in your lifetime, you’re doing something wrong. I’m not Catholic but this place as well as Del Duomo in Florence have just blown me away.
We decided to pick up some fresh bread, salami, cheese, and wine to grub for lunch. It was just what we needed. Really light and really fresh, not to mention cheap. We went back on our terrace and enjoyed the sun that followed the rain. We decided to hit the alley again for another bottle of wine from this shop we liked. It was getting dark now so everything looked different. Lit up in the night it was almost just as beautiful as the day. Definitely just as crowded! On the way back I saw a shop that sold fried food. Anything from French fries to fried calamari. I ordered the seafood mix and it was really good! A million anchovies with shrimp, calamari, fried dough, and clams.
After we finished our second bottle of wine Nate was getting hungry. I wasn’t too hungry, but I could eat. We went to this place called Tandem Steak that our Air BNB host recommended for a famous Napoli dish called Ragu. They had multiple options of Ragu, and they all looked good. Nate got the gnocchi and I got some random noodle I’ve never seen before. The dish is pasta with a red sauce and chunks of beef that had been slow cooking in the sauce all day. So the meat was extremely tender and it was everything we coulda wanted for only 8 Euro and quite a large portion. It was a late dinner so we went back to the apartment for the night. No night life for us in Naples, we’ll save ourselves for Rome.
