Day 15, October 12, Rome

We went to the train station to reserve seats for our next destination. We decided on Nice, France before our two week or longer stint in Spain. We went back to the hostel to drop off our passport and such and then we hit the city. It was really nice out, about 75 all day and clear blue skies. Made walking around, getting lost to find the sites worth it. We couldn’t find the two sites we were looking for but stumbled across a third that was huge and cool but we don’t even know the name of. From there we backtracked realizing we went a little too far since we could see the coliseum. We went back and found the fountain. Really pretty, insanely crowded. Every tourist in the city was there it seemed like. From there we went to the pantheon which was really old and cool, it has a giant hole in the center of the roof which is the only point of natural light and also a good place for rain to smash into the building on rainy days.

After we explored those sites we went to try and find this place called Michael Angelo’s keyhole where you can see the dome of the basilica through a little path. That was a wild goose chase because we never found it. We probably would have kept looking but we got real hungry and decided to leave. Instead of food we grabbed some gelato and it was to die for. The gelato out here is so good and fresh and whether you get the small cup or cone you get a large portion! We survived off that and a bottle of wine until we went to dinner for our last authentic Italian meal of the trip.

We still had no new roommates then two Argentinian guys came in and were exhausted from their travels. A feeling I can empathize with greatly. So they napped to prepare for a night on the town they were very excited for. We decided to go to dinner at the restaurant we went to with the Aussies a couple nights before that looked really good. We both got these Crustini appetizers that were amazing, topped with cherry tomatoes in a salty olive oil and then the main course. Lemon shrimp linguine for me, a mushroom and sausage calzone for Nate. Both large portions, both insanely good. Unfortunately we had to compromise on a 6:00 train if we wanted to be in Nice before midnight so we thought an early night was for the best.

After dinner we took showers then two more new roommates came. A couple where the lady was Scottish and the guy was Australian. They just got back from visiting family in eastern Italy and brought homemade booze from their cousins. After chattin it up a bit they talked us into shots of it with them and those woke us up, strong stuff. We were gonna meet them down at the bar but we got hungry and got pizza instead. It was also already midnight and we needed to get some sleep before the early train ride.
