We were both really tired so we went to bed and decided to hit the walking tour the next morning. We woke up this time and it was really fun. There was about 40 people and the three guides split us into groups so we could hear more easily. We learned about all the buildings we’d been seeing and more. Take advantage of the free walking tours, they are so worth it! You learn a ton. When Valencia was on the rise the church had all the money and they forced the poor to work for them. On one of the main churches the gargoyles on the outer perimeter were allowed to be designed by the poor people and in protest of the church they made one with a woman master-bating, one of a guy mooning the people, and the other of a guy peeing off the ledge, ironically the same place water drains from the roof when it rains. That’s just one of the hundreds of facts we learned in two hours. Nate and I had no cash so we couldn’t tip the tour guide but we got drinks with him later.
There’s a famous drink in Valencia called agua de Valencia and our whole tour group except a couple people went to go get some. We were told they were a lot stronger than they tasted, we found out later that was a fact. Essentially the drink is a Long Island iced tea but instead of tea they use orange juice. Not nasty Dole orange juice either, freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s so good! We ended up having two and made friends with our group. The place they sell them was full so the other tour groups went to a different bar and after we finished our second drinks we met up with them for a beer. After we hung out there another two hours everyone that hadn’t had an agua de Valencia ended up wanting one so we had a third. That third one really did it to us. All we’d eaten that day was a handful of chips from a table at the bar. We decided we needed to eat after that last one so we walked over to that cheap coffee shop/bar/restaurant by our hostel. I ordered shareable food for Nate, myself and our new Dutch friend/tour guide and then a couple waters and some coffee. But Nate was asleep at the table so I gave him the room key and said go to bed I’ll be back after this. Nate left so the Dutch guy and I indulged in some patatas bravas and went to the hostel. Nate was out cold. I wasn’t too tired so we went to the bar in our hostel and the Dutch guy ordered two large beers for us and we played cards with some French people we met.
It was around 22:30 and Nate was still out so I decided to go get some food for us. We found a kebap shop not too far away so I bought both of us sandwiches and walked back to the hostel. I went to the lounge and ate mine and at 23:30 Nate texted me and said where are you. I told him I was eating at the bar and there was a sandwich in his bed for him. He joined me to eat, very thankful for the grub and then it was my turn for bed. I went to bed and Nate went out with the Dutch guy and some of the other people we met at the bar. Nate said it was terrible though because he was still tired and didn’t even want to take a sip of alcohol even though people kept trying to buy him drinks. I ended up waking up at 3:30 or so when our roommates came in rowdy as ever and couldn’t get back to sleep until 10:00, even then I didn’t sleep long. Only until about noon or so. Same with Nate. Super weird day, but really fun and met a lot of people. We hadn’t really day drank too much on the trip since Oktoberfest, so it felt like that in terms of how fast it caught up to us and how tired we got.
